The Deep Rest Key: Why Your Brain Fog Isn't "Just Your Age"

Hey Reader,

Every issue of The Vitality Code brings you three things: the science, the tools, and something you can actually do this week to move the needle on your brain health and longevity. No overwhelm. No fluff. Just the good stuff — straight from the research and from my own living experiment.

I want to share a sentence I can't stop hearing.

I've now interviewed more than 60 accomplished women in midlife about their brain health. Over and over, one of them would pause and say: "I felt like I was losing my mind."

Then came the same list. Brain fog. 3am wake-ups. Exhaustion nobody could explain. And a doctor who said, "It's just your age."

It's not "just" anything. Something real is happening in your brain in midlife — and there is a lot you can do about it.

🔬 THE SCIENCE

A 2021 brain-imaging study from Weill Cornell scanned 161 women aged 40 to 65 before, during, and after the menopause transition. Brain structure, connectivity, and energy use all shifted — and those changes were tied to menopause itself, not simply to getting older.

Here's the part nobody tells you: after menopause, those markers largely stabilized, and gray matter recovered in key regions tied to cognitive aging. Your brain isn't failing. It's recalibrating — and it needs support while it does.

One of the biggest supports is sleep. In a landmark 2013 study (in mice), the space between brain cells expanded by about 60% during sleep, and the brain cleared beta-amyloid — a waste protein linked to Alzheimer's — faster than when awake. Sleep is when your brain takes out the trash. Every 3am wake-up interrupts the shift.

This is exactly why Key 3 of The Vitality Code Framework — Deep Rest to Feel Your Best — isn't a luxury. It's where clear thinking gets made.

🛠 THE TOOL

You can't change what you can't see. That's the whole idea behind my own Living Study, and it works for brain fog too. Start a simple fog log — a notebook or the notes app on your phone — and each morning record:

  • Fog score — 1 (crystal clear) to 5 (can't find my keys or my words)
  • Hours of sleep
  • Night wake-ups — how many, and roughly when

A week of entries will show you patterns no one else can see — not your doctor, not your partner, not me.

✅ THIS WEEK'S ACTION

Start your fog log tomorrow morning and keep it for seven days. Then hit reply and tell me your #1 brain fog question. I read every reply, and I'll answer as many as I can live on October 20.
